There are different estimates for Salaries available online. Glassdoor provides a general overview of salaries for Data Scientists, StackOverflow provides a specific calculator, and several recruitment agencies provide salary estimates for different positions.
For instance, Harnham produces an annual salary guide for many data professions across the UK, several European countries, and the US. This is an exercise shared by Orange Quarter, and Wyatt Partners. Storm2 provides an estimate of tech salaries for fintech companies. While BigCloud specifically focused on a report of Data Science salaries across Europe. Other recruitment agencies such as Robert Walters, Darwin recruitments, or KDR Recruitment have also published Data Science salaries.
Consolidating the data from these different sources, we can come up with three summary tables:
1. A general average salary estimate for data scientists and engineers
2. A summary table for more granular estimates of data scientists and engineers salaries
3. A general salary estimate for a head of data science and engineering
The estimates from the different sources provide a fairly consistent estimate of the salary of a data scientist in Amsterdam. The range of these estimates only varies by about 5k€.
When looking at more granular data, Data Scientists with up to 2 years of experience are paid around 40k€, while those with up to 6 years of experience tend to be paid in the 50k€s, while salaries for more senior Data Scientists are typically in the 70k€s range.
For Head of Data science positions, we have a wide range of estimates; the range of estimation is 42k€. However, they can be split up into two groups — positions have a higher degree of granularity than a generic head of data position, such as those provided by Storm2 and Wyatt Partners, and those who are fairly generic. Generic positions appear to have a consistent estimate at 105k€.
Glassdoor estimates the salary of a data engineer in Amsterdam at around 51k€.
There are big variations in salary estimates for data engineers. Glassdoor provides an estimate at the 51k€, while other sources such as Robert Walters and Big Cloud place their salary estimates much higher, respectively 72.5k€ and 82k€.
Junior Data Engineers earn salaries in the 40s, rising to around 60k€ when they reach mid-level. Salaries for senior profiles stabilizing at around 80k€. However, lead Data Engineers in Large companies can earn more than that, reaching a midpoint of 100k€, according to Storm2.
There are a lot of variation in the estimated salaries for Head of Data Engineering, from the lower estimations at around 105k€ from Robert Walters, Oranje Quarter, and Storm2 to an upper limit of 181k€ for the estimation of Wyatt Partners, for Head of Data Engineering working in a publicly listed company.
Many factors will come to influence the salary of data scientists and data engineers in the Netherlands. Years of experience, skills, and technologies mastered, type of previous experiences, and education, are to name just a few of the factors that will impact remuneration.
It can be difficult to estimate the salaries for Data Scientists and Data Engineers. Data Science and Data Engineering are catch-all titles with potentially different demands and expected salary. For instance, a data engineer can be the title used for someone exclusively coding in SQL and leveraging SSIS for integration, or a data engineer leveraging a wider range of technologies such as cloud and big data (e.g., Spark). The same is true for Data Scientists that can be working in niche areas of deep learning or doing little more than customer insights modeling, …
